(KNSI) – St. Cloud Metro Bus will start collecting fares on October 1st and riders will have new payment options. The Metro Bus is using new fareboxes. The new boxes take cash, the Metro Bus Smart Ride Card and the new Metro Bus Smart Ride App. The fareboxes are installed on all fixed routes, Dial-a-Ride, ConneX in Sartell, and Northstar Link.

The Smart Ride App can be found on the app stores for iPhone and Android users. Search for “Smart Ride App.”

The app can purchase 31-day passes for all services and seven and one-day passes for fixed routes. Customers can board buses using the smart ride app with a pass. The smart ride app also includes real-time fixed-route bus information and a trip planner tool.

The $25 pre-loaded smart cards can be ordered online or picked up at Lunds & Byerlys, St. Cloud Hospital Gift Gallery, St. Benedict’s Community gift shop, or the CentraCare Plaza gift shop. Riders can also get pre-loaded 31 day passes from St. Cloud Radio Marketplace. A $50 card will cost $35.

St. Cloud State University students, St. Cloud Technical and Community College students, and kids in District 742 will be able to use their student IDs.

Metro Bus says fareboxes should help board buses faster. Free, unlimited transfers will still be offered using the Smart Ride Card within two hours of paying your fare. Riders will no longer need a transfer ticket.

During an upcoming promotional period beginning Sunday, September 19th, customers will be able to redeem Metro Bus day passes, ride passes, change cards, and tokens for like value on a free Smart Ride Card. The option to exchange unused passes is open until October 16th.
