(KNSI) – The Local Education and Activities Foundation’s Adopt a Classroom program is now collecting donations to help teachers with classroom supplies in St. Cloud Area School District 742.
The program works by individuals such as parents, grandparents, businesses, or organizations adopting the classroom for $250, and 100% of the money goes directly to the classroom. Donors can choose the classroom or donate and have LEAF draw from teachers who apply for the program. LEAF then sees that the funds get to a classroom that needs them. The teacher is then informed of the adoption, and the donor receives an adoption certificate for the classroom for the year.
LEAF Executive Director Bruce Hentges says this has been one of the most rewarding things he has done because he can see the connections in the community and “how much this community actually supports this public school system. LEAF is a conduit for private funds for public schools. And time and again the community steps up.”
Most recently, Hentges says, the St. Cloud Area Golden Gloves Boxing Foundation gave $10,000, which is enough to adopt 40 classrooms. Since the program began in 2011, Hentges says $230,000 has been given, which has helped around 900 classrooms.
A recent survey shows 94% of teachers spend their own money on school supplies, shelling out an estimated $479.
