(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Police Department says a teenager was taken to the hospital early Friday morning and could face several charges after allegedly robbing a man and stealing his car.

SCPD says shortly after 1 a.m., an 18-year-old man called police saying three people had assaulted and robbed him after they approached him in the 300 block of Laudenbach Court. The victim later told police on the scene that the assailants took his backpack and car keys, and after the man ran away from the group, he told police he saw that his car had been stolen.

Around the same time that the robbery victim called the police, SCPD says a complaint came in about a driver that was swerving on the roadway. SCPD says the description matched that of the stolen car, and an officer tried to stop it as it was traveling East on University Drive. The driver got away after the chase hit high speeds and the officer stopped pursuing the car, but at 1:40 a.m., officers found the car and again tried to stop it. The driver allegedly fled again, losing officers.

Police say they found the vehicle a third time shortly afterward in a train yard near Breckenridge and 14th Avenue North. When the car tried to leave, police say it hit an elevated track platform and caught fire. Police say they were able to pull the suspect driver, a 14-year-old St. Cloud boy, out of the car. He was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

SCPD says the boy could potentially face charges in connection to the robbery, the stolen car, the pursuits and allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police say the robbery victim did not need medical attention and that he did not see any weapons during the assault. The SCPD media release did not contain any other information about the other two individuals allegedly involved in the assault and robbery.
