(KNSI) – A St. Cloud resident has been charged after allegedly striking a child on a bicycle with his SUV and fleeing the scene while intoxicated.

36-year-old Winner Omweno Marube has been charged with a gross misdemeanor of failure to stop after a collision involving injury or death, as well as a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated.

St. Cloud police initially responded to a hit-and-run at 9:53 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at the intersection of 8th Street North and 33rd Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found the child with a significant laceration to the head. He was later diagnosed with a concussion and two broken fingers.

A witness told police he saw the child biking southbound on 33rd Avenue and crossing 8th Street when a dark-colored SUV traveling westbound struck him. The SUV reportedly stopped one block away before leaving the scene.

Marube later turned himself in and admitted he was the driver, saying he fled in a panic. A breathalyzer test showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.089, above the legal limit of 0.08.

If convicted, Marube faces up to 364 days in jail and a $3,000 fine on the gross misdemeanor charge, and up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine on the misdemeanor charge. He is scheduled to appear for an omnibus hearing in Stearns County District Court at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, July 7.
