(KNSI) — Whether it’s a pastrami on rye, a BLT on toasted wheat, or a good old-fashioned PB&J cut the fancy way, today is the day to celebrate a simple yet satisfying staple, as November 3rd is National Sandwich Day.

Portable, convenient, and delicious, there are several different stories surrounding how the sandwich was named.

The most widely believed legend is the name came from John Montagu, who was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Sandwich is a town just inland from the North Sea, County Kent, England. A British statesman, Montagu loved to play cards and would ask for meat on bread to be brought to him at the gaming table. It sustained him over long periods of play, didn’t get his hands dirty and didn’t require a fork.

Others, recognizing his genius, would ask for the “same as Sandwich,” and it was eventually shortened to just “sandwich.”

Fries or chips, pickle or no, mayo or mustard, bon apetit!
