(KNSI) — Sartell High School senior Henry Johnson has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Johnson is among less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors who are the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s share of the national total of graduating seniors.
His parents, Katie and Todd Johnson, say they are “proud of Henry and we appreciate the support, opportunities, and activities available in the Sartell-St. Stephen School District.”
According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, “These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 95% of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.”
In a press release, Sartell High School Principal Shayne Kusler said the school is also proud of Henry and his continued impressive academic achievements and of “how he represents himself as a Sabre in so many areas, participating in many Music programs including Band, Jazz Band, Choir, and Chamber Choir and Activities including Robotics, Math League, and Theatre.”
