(KNSI) – The city of St. Joseph will celebrate the grand reopening of Klinefelter Park later this month with a toddler triathlon and a family event.
The celebration is set for Saturday, June 20th at 11:00 a.m. The triathlon will feature three legs for young participants: a swim, a bike ride and a run. The city is billing the morning as fun for the whole family.
The event coincides with the debut of new playground equipment at the park. According to a park board finance report, the city council approved a bid of $299,250.91 from PlayPower LT Farmington, Inc. for the new Klinefelter Park play equipment.
The city set aside $170,000 from its levied park budget toward the equipment, along with a $20,000 donation from the St. Joseph Lions. In April, the council approved transferring another $50,000 from the debt relief fund for the project. The report says remaining costs will be covered by selling old equipment and through in-kind donations of rock and delivery.
The finance report also outlined other park board activity. The board set aside $2,500 to add nature finding signs at the new Rivers Bend Park, and the city received $356,994.01 in final LCCMR grant proceeds for that park in early May. At Millstream Park, new fencing around the east softball field is being installed this spring by Bemboom Fence at a project cost of $59,200, funded through Public Works. The board is also planning future upgrades at Schneider Field in Memorial Park, where the pitcher’s mound is being rebuilt this year with help from the St. Joseph Joes baseball team.
