(KNSI) – Stearns County authorities are investigating a traffic crash that occurred Monday afternoon in Munson Township.

Police and emergency personnel responded to reports of a crash involving a school bus at 3:21 p.m. on Jay Avenue, south of Highway 23. A preliminary investigation revealed that a bus operated by Richmond Bus Service was traveling southbound on Jay Avenue when the driver, Thomas Gordon Hedberg of Sartell, entered a ditch, struck a tree, and came to a stop, straddling a driveway.

Approximately 30 children were on board at the time of the crash, with several sustaining minor injuries. The bus sustained heavy damage to the front end and passenger side. Parents were notified of the crash and collected their children at the scene. A local towing company later removed the bus.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, although authorities say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.
