(KNSI) – Drivers in St. Cloud should plan for road closures and traffic disruptions this Friday and Saturday as more than 2,400 participants are expected for the Earth Day Run.

The event, sponsored by CentraCare and M Physicians Orthopedics, includes a free kids’ 1K, a 5K, a half marathon and a relay race over two days.

The closures begin Friday morning, April 17th, when West St. Germain Street shuts down between 4th Avenue South and 10th Avenue South starting at 8:00 a.m. for the 1K.

Friday evening brings more extensive closures for the 5K, running from approximately 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. West St. Germain Street will again close between 4th Avenue South and 10th Avenue South, and northbound traffic on 4th Avenue South from West St. Germain Street to 1st Street South will be shut down. Riverside Drive SE from East St. Germain Street to the south dead end will also close.

Lanes on 1st/2nd Street North from 6th Avenue North to Riverside Drive SE, including Veterans Bridge, will remain open but narrowed in both directions to make room for runners.

The largest closures come Saturday, April 18th, for the half-marathon, with road impacts expected from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The closure of West St. Germain Street between 9th/10th Avenue South and 4th Avenue South will begin earlier, at 6:00 a.m.

The half marathon route stretches across a wide section of the city, with full closures on 6th Avenue North from West St. Germain South to 1st Street North, Riverside Drive Southeast from East St. Germain Street to 10th Street Southeast, and numerous streets through the southeast and south sides of St. Cloud, including portions of University Drive, Kilian Boulevard, Clearwater Road and surrounding residential streets.

On 9th/10th Avenue South between 4th Street South and West St. Germain Street, north-south traffic will be maintained, but access to and from 4th Street South, Highway 23/2nd Street, 1st Street South and West St. Germain will be closed to northbound traffic.

Law enforcement will be stationed along the half-marathon route to help runners and drivers navigate the area.

The city is advising motorists to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time both days.
