(KNSI) – Two men escaped after their pickup truck partially broke through the ice on Lake Koronis near Paynesville.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 12:25 p.m. on Saturday on a report that a vehicle had broken through the ice near the Veterans Park Access. Thirty-three-year-old Kyle Vierzba of Montrose and 52-year-old Shawn Vierzba of Little Canada were in a 2003 Nissan Frontier on the lake when they felt the truck beginning to break through the ice.

Both men were able to safely exit the vehicle and make it back to shore before calling for help. Neither reported any injuries. Andy’s Towing later removed the vehicle from the lake.

Deputies say the incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by changing ice conditions on area lakes. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain cautious and mindful of ice thickness before venturing onto frozen lakes throughout the county.
