(KNSI) – Winter weather and wind advisories have been issued for central Minnesota on Thursday.

The winter weather advisory will run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Stearns County, and from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Benton, Sherburne, Wright, and Morrison Counties.

Additionally, a wind advisory begins in Stearns County at 9:00 a.m. and in Wright County at noon. Both go until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Forecasters say light snow and gusty northwest winds of 40 to 50 mph, along with plummeting temperatures, will develop behind an Arctic front. While snow accumulations will likely be only an inch or less, the gusty winds will blow the falling snow around, creating low visibility.

Brief bursts of heavier snow and whiteout conditions are possible during the afternoon. This could create flash-freeze conditions, leading to icy roads and surfaces.

Meteorologists say to plan on slippery road conditions and falling tree branches due to the wind. They also say for those venturing outside, surfaces such as sidewalks, stairs and driveways can be icy and slippery, increasing the risk of a fall.
