(KNSI) — Stearns County Emergency Management is teaming up with the Public Safety Foundation to boost local weather monitoring and emergency readiness.

The Foundation is covering the costs to install ten more weather stations throughout Stearns County and supply anemometers to all public safety departments in the area. This $2,000 project won’t cost taxpayers anything since the Foundation is picking up the entire tab.

The county already has eight weather stations up and running. There are two in St. Cloud, one each in Greenwald, Holdingford, New Munich, Paynesville, Richmond, and St. Stephen. Now they’re adding new ones in Albany, Belgrade, Brooten, Cold Spring, Freeport, Kimball, Melrose, St. Augusta, St. Martin, Sauk Centre.

The stations come loaded with sensors that track things like wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, air pressure, and rainfall. The county says the information is crucial for first responders and emergency planners who need to make fast decisions when dangerous weather rolls in. A press release says getting accurate wind readings helps everyone understand what’s happening with storms, figure out potential dangers, and share solid information with the National Weather Service for their warnings and alerts.

The county says it is looking forward to continuing the partnership to make sure they’re ready when severe weather affects the area.
