(KNSI) – Construction of a new multipurpose indoor athletic facility is officially underway after a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday.
School board members and administrative staff turned the first shovelfuls of dirt at Apollo High School’s campus for the new Apex Athletics Center.
Superintendent Laurie Putnam told the crowd. “Thank you for being here to celebrate this exciting moment for our schools. This project reflects our district’s vision to provide high-quality opportunities for every student. We are committed to creating spaces that support learning, growth, and connection—both inside and outside the classroom. This athletic facility is part of that commitment, giving students access to safe, modern, and inclusive spaces where they can thrive. This facility will have a lasting impact on students. For those here today, it means better opportunities to compete, practice, and be part of a team. For future students, it represents a continued investment in their success and well-being. It will bring students together, build pride in our schools, and create experiences that stay with them long after graduation. This is about building something that supports generations of students to come.”
The 70,000-square-foot, $15 million complex is designed for year-round use and will feature a full-size turf field, batting cages, golf simulators, and a walking track. It will accommodate sports including soccer, football, lacrosse, softball, baseball, and golf, and will be available for both district teams and community use.
The project is funded through a voter-approved referendum that passed in April of 2025 with support from 54% of voters.
The school board finalized the center’s name in recent months. The word “Apex” was chosen to reflect both the building’s height and the goal of reaching peak athletic achievement.
