(KNSI) – St. Cloud’s Planning Commission meeting where a discussion on letting homeowners raise their own chickens has been canceled.

According to the city, the meeting was called off due to a lack of a quorum. The ordinance would allow chicken coops in certain districts. The policy was reviewed in 2014, and the planning commission held a public hearing then. Those against the move cited neighborhood noise and public health concerns. Proponents said it was a progressive step for the community, which would only benefit the neighborhoods’ quality of life. The planning commission ultimately voted it down, citing residents’ concerns about the idea.

The topic was again introduced in 2023 but was not forwarded to the council.

Advocates have asked the city to reconsider. The commission is looking at an ordinance from Eagan as a possible template for regulations. They include allowing six hens on single-family properties zoned R-1, R-1A or 12 per acre on larger properties.

The city may require an online chicken education course before permits are granted. Other cities that allow chicken on single-family lots include Clearwater, Cottage Grove, Duluth, Edina, Maple Grove, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sartell. No makeup date for the meeting was announced.
