(KNSI) — A St. Cloud City Councilwoman is asking to consider restricting where level three predatory offenders can live.
The topic was brought up during a work session held Monday evening. Dr. Karen Larson spoke with KNSI News after the meeting and explained she started thinking about it in 2022, “Within a month two level three predatory offenders who had had victims under the age of 16 moved in, in close proximity to one of our schools. And I said to myself, that doesn’t really seem like the best arrangement.”
Larson envisions the city developing an ordinance “that relates only to level three offenders with young victims and the proximity with which they can live to schools.”
The item will be discussed under new business at the next council meeting in June. It will start by reviewing Apple Valley’s ordinance, which has withstood court challenges.
If approved, any offender currently living near a school would be grandfathered in. St. Cloud has nine level three offenders.
Ninety-two cities in Minnesota have some restrictions on where level three offenders can live.
