(KNSI) — Country singer Toby Keith has died.

A message posted on his social media pages says he passed away peacefully Monday night, surrounded by family. He had been fighting stomach cancer since 2022. A fight, the message says, Keith fought with “grace and courage.”

The family is asking for privacy.

Performing and recording right up until the end of 2023, he said via his Instagram page, his three sold out shows in Las Vegas was a “pretty damn good way to end the year.”

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Keith came on the scene in the 1990s and had a string of hits, including “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue,” which was written in the wake of 9/11. Others include “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “Red Solo Cup,” “How Do You Like Me Now,” “Beer for My Horses.” and “I Love This Bar.” The success of which he parlayed into the country themed Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill. He sold more than 40 million records over the course of his career.

Keith is survived by his wife, Tricia Lucas, and their three children, daughters Shelley, fellow singer Krystal Keith, and son, Stelen.

He was 62.
