(KNSI) – Let there be light! The Great River Regional Library will change out its fluorescent bulbs.
The St. Cloud City Council approved spending $384,000 to replace them with new energy-efficient LED lights, but is anticipating a rebate of $118,000 from Xcel Energy’s Building Energy Efficiency Program. That will bring the net cost down to $266,000.
The project will be paid out of the Community Facilities Sales Tax funds.
Officials estimate it will save taxpayers around $55,000 and 476,000 kilowatt-hours a year. The savings mean the project should pay for itself in just over three years. The work is anticipated to be done by the end of April.
The lighting and control system were installed in 2008 when the library opened. It is no longer manufactured or supported.
