(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding ice anglers to be careful after a man died when his truck crashed through thin ice on Mille Lacs Lake.

Authorities say Richard Gadbois was driving his truck on an area of the lake where the ice was about six inches thick when he went through, plunging Gadbois into the frigid water. A bystander pulled him out, and he was rushed to an area hospital, where he died. The DNR says general guidance is about 13″ to 17″ of ice are needed to support a truck, but they say to remember no ice is 100% safe.

Gadbois’s death is the latest in a string of thin ice accidents. The warm weather in December has led to poor ice conditions across much of the state.

The DNR says to check with local bait stores and resorts for the latest ice conditions before venturing out.
