(KNSI) – Minnesota Nice is more than a slogan.
According to personal finance website WalletHub, we rank as the third most generous state in the country behind Utah and Wyoming. Minnesotans finished in the top ten for volunteer rate and volunteer hours per capita.
That could be seen in late September. During the United Way of Central Minnesota Days of Caring campaign, it is estimated that 500 volunteers helped out with 65 area projects for a combined 1,507 hours. That equates to almost $52,000 worth of work for one week alone.
Give to the Max Day is another opportunity to show generosity. While Minnesota finished second in the percentage of the population who donated time, its ranking for those who donate money slides to 16th. We are 22nd in the number of people collecting and distributing food.
WalletHub says the total number of volunteer hours nationwide dropped by 2.82 billion last year, or nearly 40%. The site says people are busier than ever as they add a second job or side hustle to help with inflation. That leaves them with less time and money for charity.
