(KNSI) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has extended the air quality alert through 9:00 p.m. on Friday.

Benton, Stearns and Sherburne counties, and other parts of the state, from east central Minnesota to the southeastern corner of the state, are in the extended alert.

The air quality is being diminished due to high ozone levels near the ground. Ozone forms when nitrogen oxide and other compounds mix. Those chemicals are most prevalent during hot, dry, sunny conditions like the area has seen this week.

Weekend rain is expected to clean the air and eliminate those high ozone levels.
