(KNSI) — Roughly two-thirds of the state is under a moderate fire danger with burning restrictions in place until further notice.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wildfire prevention specialist Karen Harrison explains it can even happen during flooding. “Spring fire danger will exist until vegetation greens up and the trees have leaves. Dead, dry vegetation from last year becomes very good fuel for wildfire. Even after a rainstorm, windy weather can dry out the landscape in just a couple hours, so people need to follow those burning restrictions.”
She says 90% of all wildfires are caused by humans, with most occurring as escaped debris fires.
