(KNSI) – A central Minnesota school district and bus company are two of the latest to get funding for school bus stop arm cameras.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety doled out $1.2 million in its sixth and final round of grants to change dangerous driving behaviors and protect children. Olander Bus Service in Becker received $72,517 to get 26 cameras, and the Albany School District was awarded $56,715 to purchase 19 cameras.
In all, 27 schools and transportation companies got grants in the final round to help keep students safe. The program started in 2022.
In the five years leading up to that, law enforcement wrote tickets to 4,652 drivers for stop-arm violations stateside.
The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services conducts an annual illegal passing survey in Minnesota. Participating school bus drivers witnessed 464 stop arm violations in a single day during the 2023 survey.
