(KNSI) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is ordering flags to be flown at half-staff on Saturday to honor slain Pope County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Josh Owen.

The decree covers only state buildings but Walz’s office says it encourages businesses, individuals, and other organizations to follow suit. Owen was one of three law enforcement officers to be shot this past weekend when responding to a domestic assault at an apartment in Cyrus.

He answered the fateful call on his 44th birthday. He had been with the sheriff’s office for 12 years. Walz says, “With its deepest gratitude, the State of Minnesota recognizes Deputy Josh Owen for his dedicated service to, and sacrifice for, his fellow Minnesotans, and our prayers are with his family, friends, and community.”

The order lasts from sunrise to sundown on April 22nd.
