(KNSI) – St. Cloud’s North Star Curling Club is only about halfway through its first league season, but there are plenty of signs that bringing the sport to central Minnesota has been a resounding success.

President Nathan Lee says the positive reception was immediate.

We — I mean, over a couple of days filled all of our six ‘learn to curl’ sessions. We actually had to add a seventh ‘learn to curl’ session, just due to the demand. And then we were able to fill two 10-week leagues over a matter of days, also.”

Lee says the staff at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center has been great to work with. They helped to find some ice time on the practice rink on Sunday evenings for a mini four-week league for some curlers who had been put on a waiting list.

Lee says plans are in the works to expand the club later this year.

“We’ll actually be able to start in the fall. So, we’re looking at maybe a September, October start and we’ll likely have a fall league for 10 to 12 weeks, small break over the Christmas season, and then do another full league.”

Lee says come January 2024, he thinks they’ll have enough ice time for three brackets.
