(KNSI) – The Minnesota State Patrol says an Eagan police officer suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash Tuesday morning.

According to the preliminary report from investigators, 22-year-old officer Kade Eggum of Eagan was responding to an emergency call with his lights activated and was merging onto Interstate 35E North from Pilot Knob Road. He attempted to make a left turn at the median crossover at Yankee Doodle Road and collided with a northbound semi driven by a 27-year-old Florida man. The squad came to rest in the center median. The officer was extricated from his squad car and taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. His official condition has not been released.

A third vehicle was also involved after the initial crash and was hit on the passenger side. Neither the semi driver nor the other driver were hurt.

The northbound lanes of North 35E were closed for several hours as the state patrol reconstructed the accident. A tank on the semi also reportedly ruptured, and the contents spilled onto the road, but have since been cleaned up.
