(KNSI) — The Minnesota hockey community is mourning the loss of another teenage player.
Sixteen-year-old Cormick Scanlan died after suffering a stroke on December 6th. His family learned he had a rare blood vessel disorder and underwent surgery on December 15th. His Caring Bridge page says Scanlan suffered another stroke on December 17th and the impact first affected the left hemisphere of his brain before it progressed into the right. He was in a “medically induced deep sleep state” and died “peacefully” on Christmas Day, surrounded by his family.
Scanlan was a student at Cretin Durham Hall in St. Paul and played hockey, basketball and football.
A GoFundMe page was started to help the family with medical expenses and funeral costs.
Another hockey player, 17-year-old Charlie Boike, died in a car accident on December 10th. Boike was a junior at St. Cloud Tech High School and played for the St. Cloud Crush hockey team.
A GoFundMe was also started for the Boike family, who will use the money to establish a scholarship in Charlie’s name. A high school hockey game between cross-town rivals Crush and Cathedral will pay tribute to Boike on Friday.
