(KNSI) – A high school hockey game between cross-town rivals will pay tribute to a St. Cloud Crush player recently killed in a car crash.
The annual varsity and junior varsity games between the Crush and St. Cloud Cathedral High School will be played in memory of Charlie Boike. The games are on December 30th at the St. Cloud Municipal Atheltic Complex. JV will take to the ice at 3:00 p.m., and varsity plays at 7:00 p.m. Both teams will be wearing special commemorative jerseys.
St. Cloud Crush Hockey Booster Vice President Carl Koehn says they are asking all who come to the games to wear white. “It was one of the very first things that came up was to have all the people wear white for Charlie. And the T-shirts that we’re ordering will be white just as a visual way of letting his parents know, at that game, that they are loved.”
The first 1,000 in attendance at the varsity game will get a free commemorative T-shirt in honor of Charlie. They will also be selling shirts and decals.
Koehn’s kids played hockey with Charlie and his brothers. He talked about the kind of kid Charlie was. “The kid is just always happy. He was always positive. He was always willing to help. He’s just one of those type of people you want to be around and makes you laugh and keeps you humble. He was just an amazing kid.”
Charlie Boike died on December 10th after he lost control of his vehicle on an icy road in St. Augusta while driving home from a game.
Last year, the same game was dedicated in honor of Mack Motzko. The Cathedral graduate died in July 2021 after a car crash in Orono.
Tickets for the game are available at the door or online by clicking here.
