Minnesota Congressman Tom Emmer Named House Majority Whip

(KNSI) — Minnesota’s Sixth District Republican Congressman Tom Emmer has been elected to serve in one of his party’s top positions.

Emmer, who represents St. Cloud and the surrounding area in Washington D.C., was elected Majority Whip on Tuesday. He has represented the district since 2016 and was elected to his fifth term last week. Emmer led the House GOP campaign arm and is also the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee. He had stiff competition in Indiana’s Jim Banks and Drew Ferguson of Georgia. Rep. Ferguson was knocked out in the first round of voting, leaving Emmer and Banks to face off. In the end, Emmer won by a slim margin of victory 115-106.

Emmer said he is excited the GOP is back in the majority in the House after “four long years” and said House Republicans performed well over the last two cycles and will be “the only check on the Biden Administration in a Democrat-controlled Senate over the next two years.” Emmer said they’re “excited to get to work.”

He joins future Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Conference Chair Elise Stefanik in a leadership position.
