(KNSI) — St. Cloud police say a 17-year-old McKinley-ALC student was taken into custody after allegedly carrying a concealed handgun while riding a school bus.

Police say the incident happened Wednesday at around 3:20 p.m., and there were never any threats made with the gun, but it was believed it was in the student’s pocket. A school resource officer was made aware of the incident Thursday morning and launched an investigation. Police say they went to teen’s house in St. Cloud and recovered a handgun.

He was taken to a secure juvenile facility and is facing multiple felony charges related to illegally possessing a firearm. Investigators say no plans were ever made to use the gun for any intended purpose.

The incident Wednesday and the threats made on social media against St. Cloud Tech High School Thursday are unrelated, according to police. The student they arrested for the gun on the bus has never attended Tech High School and has not been linked to the posts. That matter is still being investigated by School Resource Officers and school district administrators.

The St. Cloud Police Department says it works directly with District 742 Staff and Administration to immediately and effectively investigate any safety concerns.

The threats made against Tech on Thursday were deemed not credible.
