(KNSI) – More than $103,000 was raised in St. Cloud to support families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Fifty-seven teams took part in last month’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Eastman Park along the shores of Lake George. The event drew around 450 walkers. Senior Community Engagement Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Amy Theis thanked the community and said it’s not too late to help.

“The people in the St. Cloud area are just so generous. We are just very lucky to be here where people really feel encouraged to give back. We still are actually fundraising until December 1st, so if people still want to give they can.”

She says the money will help fund the Alzheimer’s Association’s support groups, 24/7 Helpline, educational community classes, advocacy for Alzheimer’s legislation on a state and federal level, and help study the disease.

“The final sort of piece of the pie goes to research. Which for me, is the most exciting part of my job, because my goal is to work myself out of a job. I want to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.”

According to the association, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. In Minnesota, more than 171,000 family members and friends care for 99,000 people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
