(KNSI) – Dozens of groups are fanning out across the St. Cloud area to help local non-profits with everything from painting to yard work during the United Way Days of Caring.
On Wednesday morning, eight volunteers helped out at the Terebinth Refuge in Waite Park by rebuilding two outdoor fire pits. Volunteer June Widman, with Starrett Tru-Stone Tech Division in Waite Park, says the fire pits passed inspection.
“Our engineers have measured it. We have examined every corner of it and it’s level. It’s accurate. We’re good to go.”
She says their company has been working with the United Way for years and the workers look forward to the event.
“When we go through the Days of Caring every year, we look at the different selections. And we go okay, you know, what about this? And what about that, and we try to move from one to the other.”
June says they chose the Terebinth Refuge because it supports women escaping a life of sex trafficking. Jody Orbeck has been volunteering for eight years and talked about why she does it.
“For me, it’s giving back to the community. Just feeling good about helping somebody that just needed the additional help that they might not have time to do themselves.”
The team says they hope the women at the shelter will be able to relax and enjoy a little serenity around the fires.
