(KNSI) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension released more information about a fatal officer-involved shooting Sunday morning in Wright County.

According to a press release from the BCA, deputies responded to a home in Otsego before 1:00 for a man having a mental health crisis. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the man as 21-year-old Jordyn John Hansen. Hansen allegedly agreed to go to the hospital for an evaluation, but while waiting for an ambulance, he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and ran into the neighborhood. Deputies created a perimeter and began looking for Hansen.

According to statements from the four who engaged with Hansen, he was seen weaving between vehicles at the end of the driveway of the home in Otsego, then ran around into the backyard. The deputies said Hansen ignored their repeated commands to drop his knife. A squad car camera showed Hansen running toward one of the deputies, who fell backward as he fired his gun. Two other deputies are seen providing medical aid. Two deputies fired their tasers, and two fired their weapons.

Hansen was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

The BCA says Wright County Sheriff’s Deputies do not wear body cameras but have cameras in their squad cars. Along with audio, the cameras captured portions of the shooting but not the entire shooting.

Investigators will review the case and turn it over to the Wright County Attorney’s Office for review. The case file, including body-worn camera footage, will be released once the case is closed.

KNSI is declining to name the deputies as no charges have been filed.

Hansen’s family says the deputies had ample opportunity to safely detain him and say the shooting was unnecessary.
