(KNSI) — The Wright County Sheriff’s Office says two deputies shot and killed a man physically threatening them with a knife Sunday morning.

According to a press release, at about 12:50, deputies responded to a home in Otsego for a report of someone having mental health challenges and had threatened to harm himself and his family. Police spoke with him, and he agreed to go to the hospital for an evaluation. While waiting in the home for an ambulance, police say he fled the house and ran into the neighborhood. A perimeter was set up, and support was requested from the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter.

Investigators say a short time later; he confronted deputies in a neighboring backyard. The deputies attempted to tase the subject, but it was not successful. While he was in close proximity to the deputies, he was accused of physically threatening them with a knife. According to the sheriff’s office press release, the deputies shot the suspect and immediately began life-saving measures on him.

Paramedics arrived and rushed the man to North Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
