(KNSI) – Cathedral High School split a doubleheader Monday against Zimmerman, taking the nightcap 6-4. The win over the Thunder snaps a five-game losing streak for the Crusaders.
Cathedral struck first in the top of the third inning when shortstop Trevor Fleege singled to center. He stole second and third base before coming home on a base knock by catcher Jack Theisen. An error by Zimmerman second baseman Matthew Freeberg plated Theisen. The Thunder had four errors in total.
Zimmerman answered with three in the bottom of the inning. The first five batters reached, including a hit by pitch and a fielder’s choice for designated hitter Max Gostonczik. Cathedral third baseman Grant Wensmann tried for an out at home plate on a groundball, but Freeberg got his foot in under the tag.
Cathedral tied it up in the top of the fourth. A triple to the left-field warning track by center fielder John Hawkins turned into a run on a sacrifice fly from Steven Ellingson.
A two-out run in the bottom of the fifth gave Zimmerman the lead back. A line drive single from Thunder right fielder Aiden Pardino plated catcher Calan Bushinger.
Two errors loomed large in the top of the sixth as Cathedral pushed across the final three runs of the game. They seemed to figure out Zimmerman starter Trevor Jones. Three consecutive hitters smacked line drives to right-center. Two fell in and, combined with the shaky defense, a rally was born.
Cathedral’s Austin Lenzmeier notched the win in relief, going 2.2 innings.
Zimmerman won Game One, 5-1.
