(KNSI) – Gubernatorial candidate Michelle Benson has dropped out of the governor’s race. The Minnesota Senator from Ham Lake announced her decision on Friday. She’s served 12 years in the Legislature. She spoke to her supporters via a Twitter post.
“I still believe I’m the best candidate to carry our principles, beat Tim Walz and lead Minnesota forward. As I’ve spoken with many delegates in recent days and it’s clear that this is not the right time for me. Heartfelt conversations and soul searching have led us to the decision to step back from this campaign for the good of the process, and in fairness to my volunteers and supporters, I will not be continuing my campaign to be the Republican nominee for governor.”
Benson says she will take some time off to be with family before going on the campaign trail to support conservative candidates. She was one of eight people seeking the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Governor Tim Walz. The others remaining in the race are Paul Gazelka, Scott Jenson, Mike Murphy, Mike Marti, Kendall Qualls, Neil Shah and Rich Stanek.
