(KNSI) – In a shocking twist, the Minnesota Vikings traded their first-round draft pick (twelfth overall) to a division foe. The Vikings got the 32nd and 34th choices, and a third-round selection from the Detroit Lions with the 46th pick also being sent to Motown.
The Lions had already selected University of Michigan defensive end Aiden Hutchinson and added wide receiver Jameson Williams from the University of Alabama with the swap. Receiver was a position that many expected the Lions to address coming into the draft. Williams is a dynamic, big-play wideout and he’ll test the weakest position group of the Vikings twice a year. He’s recovering from an ACL tear suffered in January.
For Minnesota, bolstering the defensive backfield was of high priority for incoming general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton, University of Washington cornerback Trent McDuffie, and University of Florida cornerback Kaiir Elam all came off the board while the Vikings waited to pick at 32. They eventually got University of Georgia safety Lewis Cine. The choice was generally well received.
