(KNSI) – Democrat representative John Huot has legislation winding its way through Saint Paul that could change the way fans watch youth sports. The Rosemount lawmaker’s bill would empower the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission to hit individuals who physically interfere in a game with up to $5,000 in fines. Huot says it is important to keep in mind that sports are supposed to be fun.
“The objective is to bring back some civility to our youth sports,” said Rep. Huot. “From little league to high school sports, we have to remember that this is about a positive experience for the players. Respect and safety of the players and officials is a must.”
The bill has passed the House Public Safety and Criminal Justice Finance and Reform Committee. It now moves to Judiciary Finance and Policy.
45-year-old Phillip Lokken was arrested after an incident occurring late in a high school basketball game in Audubon earlier this month. The scene has garnered attention from across the state. Lokken tossed a box of popcorn at a referee after a foul was called. He then swore at the official and flipped him off. Lokken proceeded to get in the ref’s face, grabbed his shirt, and ripped off his lanyard. All of his actions would be prohibited if Huot’s bill becomes law.
