(KNSI) – St. Joseph won’t ask the Minnesota Legislature for permission to collect a food and beverage tax. The item was in front of the St. Joseph City Council on Monday and all those who spoke said they wouldn’t support the tax.

The council members said they didn’t feel it was the right time to ask for the tax. Other council members stated they felt local restaurants were already devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the tax could be an undue burden on them.

Sartell residents rejected a proposed food and beverage tax for recreational improvements earlier this year.

St. Cloud is asking voters to approve a .5% sales tax to help pay for improvements to the Municipal Athletic Complex. The city asks voters to approve a .5% sales tax for four road and utility projects.

St. Cloud voters will have their chance to vote on the tax in November.
