(KNSI) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is releasing more details about a shooting involving a Mahnomen County deputy sheriff.

According to a press release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, March 13th, a deputy tried to make a traffic stop on Highway 200. The driver fled, and a pursuit began. The first deputy slid into the ditch, and another deputy picked up where they left off. The second deputy performed a pursuit intervention technique or PIT maneuver. The fleeing driver drove into the ditch on a county road on the Village of Naytahwaush.

Investigators say two of the six people in the car fled the scene on foot. As a deputy tried to detain the four who remained at the scene, a 20-year-old female passenger allegedly produced a handgun. A deputy fired on the woman, and she was shot. The deputy immediately started first aid at the scene, and she was taken to Mahnomen Health Center and then airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo for treatment. Police say they recovered a handgun at the scene next to where she was shot. Investigators say it is unclear whether the woman fired at the deputy.

No one else was hurt.

One of the two people who fled on foot has been identified and interviewed, but the other has not been located or identified. The BCA is asking that person, or anyone who can identify that person, to contact the BCA at 761-793-7000 so that the BCA can interview them.

The BCA says the incident was caught on dashcam, and the aftermath was captured on bodycam.

KNSI is declining to name both the woman and the deputies involved as no one has been charged with a crime.
