Her career highlights a particular focus on arts and technology education at all grade levels at Sartell-St. Stephen Schools. The results of her efforts are evident in the growing student and community popularity for the development of the District’s music programs, STEAM opportunities, and the improvement of facilities for music and theater programs. Nelson played an integral role in the school district’s grade-level reconfiguration and related remodeling and construction projects.”

Kyle Breitkreutz, Director of Technology of Sartell-St. Stephen Schools praised Nelson, saying, “Kay is a leader in Sartell-St. Stephen Schools, across central Minnesota and beyond. Her involvement within the District and with MASA are clear examples of her dedication to help others in education through mentoring and leading by example. Kay’s professional leadership, inspiring commitment to education, and courageous personality make her a perfect recipient for this award.”

Nelson is an active member of MASA, serving on the MASA Board of Directors. She also serves in various capacities with the St. Cloud Area Partner for Student Success/United Way.

Each year, MASA recognizes members for their contribution to public education. MASA is a professional organization of Minnesota’s school leaders, including superintendents, assistant superintendents, directors of special education, other central office administrators, state department administrators, college and university professors, and other educators throughout Minnesota dedicated to educational leadership for students.
