(KNSI) – A Todd County man will spend the next three decades in prison for sexually assaulting six children at his family home.
Mervin Kauffman was sentenced Monday to 30 years behind bars. The assaults happened between August 14th, 2015, and September 5th, 2022, and all six victims were juveniles at the time. Kauffman acknowledged at his plea hearing that he had a significant relationship with each of them, a legal term covering family or household members.
Kauffman pleaded guilty on June 5th to six counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
The Todd County Sheriff’s Office investigated, and the county attorney referred the case to the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office for prosecution. State law lets the Attorney General step into criminal cases at a county attorney’s request; otherwise, the office handles mostly civil matters, and criminal prosecution falls to county and city attorneys.
