(KNSI) – An Ipsos poll finds one in five Americans get medication through the mail, and one in four of them have experienced a delay in delivery.
For veterans in Minnesota, a medication delay can be life-threatening. Barry Venable, public affairs officer at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center, tells KNSI that lead time is everything in mail-order meds.
“There are a variety of circumstances which are causing slightly unusual and longer processing times to receive prescriptions by mail. The VA has a huge mail-order program, and the bottom line message is veterans need to order their prescription refills as soon as possible, probably two weeks out from when their prescription expires to allow sufficient time so that they don’t experience a lapse.”
Venable says the medication supply chain is responsible for the longer processing times for prescriptions.
The National Association of Letter Carriers estimates the U.S. Postal Service handles 1.2 billion prescriptions every year, or nearly 4 million per day.
