(KNSI) — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is preparing the Minnesota National Guard to assist public safety agencies if necessary during the trial of former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter.
The City of Brooklyn Center and Hennepin County requested mobilization to readiness “out of an abundance of caution.”
In a press release from Governor Walz, he says, “we are prepared to ask members of the Minnesota National Guard to be available to support local law enforcement with the mission of allowing for peaceful demonstrations, keeping the peace, and ensuring public safety.”
The Minnesota National Guard will not be proactively assuming posts, but should they be needed, Guard members will operate in support of law enforcement. If a coordinated response is necessary, the state also said it would provide additional law enforcement resources, including the Minnesota State Patrol.
The Minnesota National Guard assisted law enforcement officers following the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright by Potter and the ensuing riots and unrest in April of this year. The entire National Guard was activated in May of 2020 to assist law enforcement during the riots following the death of George Floyd.
