(KNSI) – A woman is in custody after an alleged assault with an ax Saturday.
Police say they were called to a home on the 400 block of 8th Avenue South for a complaint of a woman with an ax trying to assault people in the neighborhood around 11:30 a.m.
According to statements they took at the scene, police say the woman went after a 44-year-old man on a ladder who was working on his house. He was able to avoid being hurt, but the ax hit the ladder. The woman then began screaming at a 52-year-old woman on a bicycle. Police say the woman ran after the bicyclist and threatened to hit her with the ax. That woman also escaped injury.
When police arrived, they said the suspect was seen holding the ax and barricaded herself inside her home.
Due to the violent nature of the woman, crisis negotiators and the St. Cloud SWAT team were called in to contain the situation and take the woman into custody. The 53-year-old was arrested about 1:40 p.m. and taken to the Stearns County Jail, where she is awaiting formal charges for two counts of second-degree felony assault.
KNSI does not typically name suspects until they have been formally charged.
