(KNSI) – Clear Lake is hosting the 9th Annual Get Youth Outdoors Day – Minnesota on Sunday.

The free event is for boys and girls ages 9 to 17 and their families to learn more about having fun outdoors. The event will be at the Wild Marsh Sporting Clays Shooting Facility, 13481 County Road 3 Southeast, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Locally trained volunteers will teach firearms safety and give kids a hands-on introduction to trap shooting, riflery (.22 caliber), and archery. The day also includes conservation education and other outdoor learning opportunities.

Volunteers will provide all supplies needed, including eye and hearing protection, firearms, and ammunition. A free picnic lunch will also be provided. Families are encouraged to preregister, but they can walk up on Sunday.

Organizers say preserving our outdoor heritage for tomorrow starts with getting kids outside today. Officials say research suggests that outdoor-related activities such as hunting create participatory pathways for children to experience nature and help kindle a lifelong interest in environmental conservation.

The Clear Lake event is part of a series of free, community-based youth outreach activities organized under Work Boots on the Ground-the USA’s flagship conservation program. It is supported by USA national conservation partners Plano Synergy, Provost Umphrey Law Firm, Thorogood, Humana, and Carhartt.

The free event is sponsored by the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s Work Boots on the Ground conservation program and hosted by Roofers International, Roofers Local 96, BAC Local 1, Central MN BCTC, and other local unions groups.
