(KNSI) – A Minnesota lawmaker says he is deploying to the Middle East.

Senator Zach Duckworth, who represents the Lakeville area, says his unit from the Minnesota Army National Guard is heading overseas to support military operations.

A news release from the Minnesota Senate Republicans says Senator Duckworth is also a Major in the Minnesota National Guard. He has been deployed twice in the last two years and most recently served with Operation Safety Net.

Duckworth issued a statement, saying, “It’s an honor to serve our state in times of need and I’m proud to wear the uniform when our country calls. Thank you to everyone who supports our servicemembers and their families during deployments. My wife Carly is a remarkably strong person and I’m very grateful for the love and support she and our kids are receiving.” His wife is due to give birth to their third child in November.

The news release does not say when he is leaving, but a post on Duckworth’s Twitter account says he “gave his goodbye kisses” early Sunday morning.

He is expected to return in time for the 2022 legislative session.
