(KNSI) – CNBC is calling Minnesota the nation’s seventh-best state for business in 2021.

The news network used 85 different metrics to evaluate how well each state excels in supporting businesses and their workers.

Minnesota scores high in several categories, ranking fourth in the country for life, health and inclusion; fourth for technology and innovation and fifth for education.

The North Star State is also 14th in access to capital and 12th for infrastructure.

Compared to other states, Minnesota isn’t the most cost-effective state to run a business in (42nd), but it is more middle-of-the-road for its cost of living (30th).

Here’s how Minnesota places in all of the study’s categories:

  • 4th— life, health and inclusion
  • 4th — technology and innovation
  • 5th— education
  • 12th — infrastructure
  • 14th — access to capital
  • 18th — economy
  • 28th — business friendliness
  • 29th — workforce
  • 30th — cost of living
  • 42nd — cost of doing business

As for Minnesota’s neighbors, North Dakota is the 18th top state for business in the nation, followed by Iowa and Wisconsin in the No. 20 and 21 spots. South Dakota is ranked 29th.

Virginia, North Carolina and Utah are CNBC’s best states for business this year.

Minnesota is home to 18 Fortune 500 businesses, including 3M, Target Corp., Hormel Foods, Best Buy and UnitedHealth Group.
