(KNSI) – A Paynesville man who admitted setting fire to a trailer with his daughter inside, killing her, has been sentenced.

John Sean Newport has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for murdering 22-yer-old Jamey Newport in July of 2019.

The 48-year-old was emotionless when asked if he had anything to say at sentencing on Friday.

Newport told the court, “Nothing further. It’s done and over.”

Stearns County Judge Sean Wang sentenced Newport to three years above the presumptive prison sentence for exceptional cruelty to his daughter.

Newport will be eligible for parole in 12 years. He was given credit for nearly two years already served.

He pleaded guilty to unintentional second-degree murder in April of 2021.

Newport doused the interior and exterior of the mobile home with gasoline and lit it on fire.

Officials say Jamey was found in the bathroom of the home and had suffered smoke inhalation.

She was rushed to Paynesville Hospital, where she died.
