(KNSI) – After lawmakers approved a bill allowing medical cannabis users to start smoking plant-based marijuana, it leaves some wondering if recreational marijuana is far behind.
Stearns County Sheriff Steve Soyka says he doesn’t support recreational marijuana.
“Making it recreational opens it up a slippery slope. Do we want to make then methamphetamine legal? And do we want to make small amounts of heroin legal? We see a lot of our drugs mixed with fentanyl. They used to be heroin, but now it’s starting to be methamphetamine. Some cocaine is here in St. Cloud has been mixed with some fentanyl. And that will lead to some overdose deaths. And when you start to go down that slippery slope of what’s legal and what’s not legal, you just definitely got to think of the long term and what the ramifications are.”
The Minnesota House passed a recreational marijuana bill, but it failed to get a hearing in the Senate.
Seventeen states have legalized recreational marijuana.
