(KNSI) – Benton, Sherburne, Stearns, and Wright Counties are reminding residents that they are responsible for protecting their private property against flooding.

That could include insurance to help restore a home once waters recede but a policy must be in place for 30 days before an incident occurs for a claim to be filed.

Several businesses sell sandbags and other items to shield homes from rising water. A list of companies, sorted by county, is linked to below.

Area county governments are explaining what their role is during emergencies as a public entity. First, they are tasked with maintaining emergency vehicle access. County response plans are designed to assist cities in ensuring that sewer and drinking water systems are not overwhelmed. The county will also try to keep roads open so traffic flows normally.
